East 87th Street

Kitchen Renovation, Postwar Apartment, Upper East Side, NYC

Overview

A kitchen renovation for a young couple with a clear vision and an appreciation for character. The design plan called for a warm, personal space that felt expressive but restrained — blending subtle vintage references with considered detailing and natural materials.

Design Highlights

  • Custom oak cabinetry with a hand-applied finish and soft-edged upper cabinet detailing to individualize the space.
  • Green slate countertops with a curved backsplash added natural depth and visual weight.
  • A freestanding refrigerator and sink skirt were a nod to vintage kitchen design while remaining practical and unfussy.
  • A muted green palette enhanced natural light and supported the apartment’s calm atmosphere.
  • Textiles, hardware, and finishes were layered for a kitchen that feels tactile, personal, and quietly timeless.

Outcome

A composed and distinctive Upper East Side kitchen that is expressive without excess, and designed to feel personal from the inside out.
